The goals of the Hutchinson Initiative are:

to prepare students for careers in sport analytics through on-the-job training with problems faced by real sports teams; and

to provide professional-grade analytics tools and insights to support Rice Athletics.
At the heart of the Hutchinson Initiative's experiential model is the Rice Sport Analytics Team (RSAT), a student-run organization that serves as a core strategic asset for Rice Athletics. By developing bespoke analytics products and insights to support varsity programs, students receive high-stakes, on-the-job training solving the actual competitive problems faced by real coaches. This immersive workflow directly fulfills our dual mission to elevate Rice teams on the field while launching our students into impactful sports careers.
Furthering this commitment to student readiness, the Rice Competitive Edge Lab provides advanced, outside-the-classroom research experiences focused on the industry's most complex, open-ended problems. By pioneering data-driven solutions to these intricate questions, participants build the highly specialized analytical expertise required to stand out as premier candidates in a competitive job market. The lab's groundbreaking research has already earned significant external prestige, attracting multiple research gifts from Major League Baseball.
To amplify the program's global reach, the Hutchinson Initiative anchors the annual American Soccer Insights Summit, a premier national gathering that promotes Rice's research profile in sport analytics. This high-profile conference routinely brings front-office executives and analytics directors from nearly half of all Major League Soccer clubs directly to the Rice campus. This unparalleled gathering establishes Rice as a vital hub for the broader soccer analytics community while providing a direct platform to showcase students' practical talents to top hiring managers.
