Trevor Caswell ’15, who is double majoring in Sport Management and History at Rice University, had the opportunity to work as a communications intern with the Media Relations Department of the Houston Texans during their training camp this fall (2014), specifically in the months of July and August.
With the Texans, Caswell split his time working in the office and on the practice field, although most of his time was spent on the latter.
While working in the office, Caswell was in charge of organizing and distributing media credentials to all members of the media. Whether they were from ESPN or KHOU, he made sure each and every one of them had their proper credentials.
Although Caswell was busier, he liked being on the practice field more because he was able to interact with the players.
“My roles during practice and at the end of practice were not the same,” Caswell explained. “During practice, it was my job to keep specific boundaries on media personnel. They were not allowed to be filming or taking pictures during the practices, and it was my job to enforce that for Coach O’Brien. Towards the end of practice, my job was to corral certain players and introduce them to the media. I had to be sure all the interviews were going smoothly, and that they didn’t last for more than 5 minutes.”
Before interning with the Houston Texans, Caswell worked as an intern for the Houston Dynamo within their Communications Department, and also with Sports Radio 610. These experiences gave him the opportunity to work with the Houston Texans.
“Being able to work with the Texans was an unbelievable experience. It gave me insight on how a professional sports organization deals with the media,” Caswell said.
Caswell plans to pursue a career in either broadcasting or sports information. Some of his idols include Scott Van Pelt and Colin Cowherd because they are guys who do it all: TV, radio, and writing.
After completing his internship with the Houston Texans this past summer, Caswell has better prepared himself for a successful future in the broadcasting or sports information industries.
James Farrimond, a senior at Rice University, is double majoring in Economics and Sport Management and minoring in Business.
