Sebastian Gonzalez ’19, a current senior double majoring in Sport Management and Economics, was featured by Rice University as an “Unconventional Student” this semester because of his roles as the President of Rice Urban Agriculture as well as a business strategy analytics intern for the Houston Astros.
This is a video and news series of extraordinary students produced by Brandon Martin, a photographer and videographer at Rice University.
“The reason I was chosen was a combination of doing something cool around campus and also off campus,” said Gonzalez.
In the past, Gonzalez worked at the small garden in Hanszen College, and Martin often came across him and engaged in conversation. Two years later as the President of Rice Urban Agriculture, Gonzalez became the student behind the building of a new $900,000 garden, and realizing that, Martin asked to shoot a video of Gonzalez and his dynamic involvements.
“It was definitely cool being selected for being an unconventional student,” said Gonzalez. “A lot of times, you feel like things you do on campus (i.e. the garden) are unnoticed and unappreciated, especially because so many people are doing amazing things. Being able to have someone showcase what you do is amazing and makes you feel like a valued person in the community.”
As a senior, Gonzalez was excited about this opportunity and embraces the video as a keepsake that he is able to take and hold as a record from Rice University and essentially have forever.
Yebin Chae, a junior from Atlanta, Georgia, is currently double-majoring in Sport Management and Kinesiology.
