Jason Petro ’17, a Mathematical Economic Analysis and Sport Management double major, has been hired by Nike as a Business Planner. He will begin in July at their corporate headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
Petro, originally from Connecticut, is excited to continue his move west and begin working at Nike Headquarters.
“I am excited to move to a new city on the West Coast and to work at a campus where there are thousands of other employees,” Petro said. “It is kind of weird that I am going from a college campus to a larger corporate campus.”
Over the last few years, Nike and Rice’s Department of Sport Management have formed a strong relationship to provide the company with talented students for internships and full-time jobs.
“For the past several years, we have enjoyed a close collaboration with the Nike business planning satellite office [in Katy] that manages the Academy Sports & Outdoors account,” Tom Stallings, a Professor in the Practice who oversees the Sport Management internships, said. “Nike has enjoyed having us funnel talent their way for internships and ultimately full-time positions.”
Petro chose to intern with Nike in the summer before his senior year because of this relationship and the potential for him to receive a full-time offer.
“It really was a tryout for a full-time job,” Petro said. “Because the three [Rice students] before me at Nike ended up getting full-time jobs, I knew with that history there was already a pipeline.”
Petro will continue his responsibilities from the summer analyzing current retail sales and forecasting future sales.
He joins former students Jesse Tsu ‘11, Christine Jeon ‘12, and Bo Sripharphan ’15 at Nike.
Jeremy Reiskind, a senior from Saint Petersburg, Florida, is majoring in Sport Management with minors in Business and Jewish Studies.
