Sophomore James Casey, who is majoring in Sport Management, Economics, and Managerial Studies, has been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team for football, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) have announced.
"My education is very important to me and I am extremely proud to represent Rice University as an Academic All-American," Casey said. "I've been fortunate to win other awards during my career, but this one is definitely the biggest honor."
After high school, Casey played four years of professional baseball before entering Rice University in Spring 2007. Because of his versatility, Casey is listed by the team as a "utility back." He's been named Conference USA Player of the Week twice this season and holds several school records.
"James is great student and even a better person," Dr. Clark Haptonstall, Director of the Sport Management Program, said. "He strives to be the best at everything so it comes as no surprise to see him honored as an Academic All-American. It is a fitting tribute to him."
