Breion Allen ’16, traveled to Los Angeles this summer to attend GALvanize - a three-day sports broadcasting workshop for women run by Fox Sports reporter Laura Okmin. Allen was one of ten women invited to participate in this workshop that emphasized the empowerment of female sports reporters.
Allen’s whirlwind weekend began with seminars and broadcasting workshops in Los Angeles on Saturday and ended with actual interviews with the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Allen interviewed wide receiver Malcom Floyd and head coach Mike McCoy.
“I learned a lot, and saw the preparation it takes to come up with a story idea and then execute it that day,” Allen said.
Allen first met Okmin at a dinner hosted by a mutual acquaintance. Since Allen looks to get into the sports broadcasting industry upon graduation, she was eager for a chance to talk with Okmin. The two kept in contact after the dinner, which eventually lead to Allen’s invitation to GALvanize.
As an undergraduate, Allen has interned with the Houston Astros and Comcast SportsNet Houston. During these internships, Allen says she learned a great deal about the importance of networking.
“My internships really have prepared me for my career by teaching me how important relationship-building is and how to keep in contact with everyone you meet because you never know who knows who.” Allen said.
Megan Palmer, a senior from Katy, Texas, is majoring in Sport Management.
