Ben Jedlovec ’08 appeared on ESPN’s Outside the Lines show, on June 7, to discuss the growing trend of defensive shifting in Major League Baseball. Jedlovec, the Vice President at Baseball Info Solutions, was a panelist (right) alongside ESPN baseball writer Jayson Stark and Terry Francona, the manager of the Cleveland Indians.
Defensive shifting occurs when baseball team moves their players into very unorthodox positions on the field in order to best defend certain hitters. Some find it controversial when a team has three infielders on the same side of the field or a third baseman playing near second base. However, Jedlovec knows it is all a reflection of the added analytics in baseball.
