Throughout the past summer, Amayla Lewinson '17 interned for the human resources department of all San Antonio affiliated sports organizations under the Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) umbrella. SS&E is the parent company of the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), the San Antonio Stars (WNBA), the San Antonio Rampage (AHL), and Silver & Black Give Back (a public charity that supports youth sports and youth-led service programs throughout San Antonio and South Texas).
In the HR department, Lewinson designed a social media initiative, using diverse platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook, to help the organization better evaluate potential candidates. She also presented this social media strategy to the human resources department, corporate administration, and her department's president. Following her presentation, it was decided that this approach would now serve as a reference for the department during the implementation of social media recruiting. While researching her proposal, Lewinson interacted with employees in virtually every department.
"I enjoyed observing and learning how the company's core principles and values are translated into every facet of how the company operates," Lewinson said. "I loved that I was able to gain insight into the functions of other departments like marketing, sales, and finance."
While the AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs, was undergoing renovations, Lewinson served as the "Move Champ." She took a big part in coordinating office relocations for the human resources department.
Now that Lewinson is back on campus, she thinks fondly of her experiences over the summer.
"Most of all I loved the people," Lewinson said. "SS&E is a company that has a reputation for valuing its employees to the utmost degree and it was wonderful to be in the presence of such special people."
Lewinson has also interned with the Human Resources Department at Rice University as well as the Marketing & Ticket Sales Department in the Athletic Department at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
