On Tuesday, April 14, Drew Dougherty took time out of his hectic schedule to speak with Rice University’s Sport Journalism class. Dougherty has worked as an integrated media manager for Texans TV since August 2009.
Dougherty stressed that there is never a typical day in his line of work; the most structured his schedule gets is during the NFL season. On game days, he interviews tailgaters and former Texans, hosts a pregame show with Chester Pitts and broadcasts, in-game with Patti Smith. He also provides stats throughout the course of the game and gives post-game interviews.
Dougherty graduated from SMU as a triple major in Spanish, Latin American Studies, and Print Journalism.
From 2000-2004 he worked as a producer and anchor for Texas Cable News. He was later an Austin Golf Magazine editor in 2005 and shortly following, became the sports director at FOX34 and Telemundo in Lubbock, Texas. He worked very closely to Texas Tech athletics until he accepted the job with Texans TV in 2009.
In additional to creating a voluminous amount of content for HoustonTexans.com, Texans TV partners with Channel 13, Fox Sports Southwest, KPRC, and KTRK which air a number of different show throughout the year.
The Houston Texans receive far more publicity and media attention than any other sports team in the area. So why did the organization create Texans TV? According to Dougherty, the Texans recognized that they had their own inventory and creative ideas that were worth selling.
Stay tuned for a few of Dougherty’s appearances this upcoming season. He will host Texans Extra Points Saturday evenings at 6:30 p.m. this fall and Puntos Extras with Enrique Vasquez (Dougherty is fluent in Spanish). He can also be seen live on Fox Sports Southwest’s Texans Countdown to Kickoff pregame shows.
