Dr. Clark Haptonstall along with 20 students, two faculty members, and two administrators traveled to Istanbul, this past spring break. These groups of students are a part of the School of Science’s GATEWAY Program.

“It was amazing to be able to travel to Istanbul with all the Rice students,” Haptonstall said. “I learned so much in just a week about the Turkish culture and Istanbul’s sports industry.”

While in Istanbul, the students were given the opportunity to visit the Fenerbahce Sporting Club. At Fenerbahce, the students got to listen to five front office executives talk about their jobs and also their internationally recognized professional soccer team.

“The people at Fenerbahce were amazing and that was the highlight of my trip,” Haptonstall. “I can definitely see where our students will be working with Fenerbahce in the future.”

Two other Sport Management majors, Enrique Walsh ‘15 and MJ Sam ‘15, also spent some time overseas in Istanbul. The students are currently spending the semester studying abroad.

Walsh spent his semester studying in London as a part of the Global Urban Lab program that is housed in the School of Social Sciences. Sam, a former football player for the Owls, spent his semester as a student, studying abroad, at Koc University in Instanbul. Sam was also an assistant football coach there as well.

Breion Allen, a junior from Birmingham, AL, is majoring in Sport Management.
